Opera Lafayette's 20th Anniversary season comes to a close with an opera that delighted audiences during the late 18th and early 19th century, not only in opera-rich Europe, but also in the young American cities of New Orleans and New York. With a cast hailing from the three nations whose cultures animated New Orleans at the time – France, Spain, and the United States – Opera Lafayette re-imagines Grétry's 1784 L'Épreuve Villageoiseas a touring production from New Orleans' earliest opera house, the Saint Peter Street Theatre.

Set in a Cajun village, The Village Trial tells the tale of a country belle (Denise) and her mother (Madame Hubert) who set out to settle scores with two amorous suitors.
